Media Storage & Recording Time Planner

Turn available storage into an estimated maximum recording time, planned session size, and remaining headroom for common audio and video workflows.

SESSION CAPACITY MODEL

Know how long you can record before you start.

Plan audio and video sessions from available storage using transparent bitrate estimates.

CAPACITY REPORT

estimated maximum time
Storage per hour
Planned session size
Headroom after session

Estimates use nominal bitrate × duration. Camera motion, codecs, variable bitrate, metadata, and device settings can change actual file size.

The storage formula behind the result

Estimated file size equals bitrate multiplied by duration, divided by eight to convert bits into bytes. The planner uses nominal bitrate values so the assumptions remain visible instead of hiding them behind a generic quality label.

Why video estimates need more headroom

Video encoders often use variable bitrate. Detailed motion, frame rate, resolution, HDR, codec choice, and camera settings can move the real result substantially. Treat the estimate as a capacity plan, leave a meaningful reserve, and confirm the actual setting in the recording app.

Before a long session

  • Check free storage in device settings and remove only files you have backed up.
  • Run a one-minute test using the exact recording settings.
  • Confirm power, temperature, microphone route, and interruption settings.
  • Keep enough reserve for temporary files and normal device operation.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

How is recording time calculated?+

The planner divides available bytes by the selected nominal bitrate. It uses decimal gigabytes because device storage is commonly marketed that way.

Why can the real file size be different?+

Variable bitrate, codec efficiency, camera motion, frame rate, metadata, and app settings can all change the actual result. Keep headroom and verify your selected app settings.

Does the planner inspect my phone storage?+

No. Browsers do not expose that device information here. Enter the free-storage value you see in your device settings.

Which profile should I choose?+

Choose the closest nominal bitrate to your planned recording. The built-in profiles are planning references, not claims about every iPhone or app preset.
